Derby County narrowly defeated Wigan Athletic to continue their encouraging Championship form.

Derby County’s 1-0 away victory against Wigan Athletic means that Steve McClaren’s side have won their last five Championship games.

Fans of the Pride Park club have taken to Twitter in response to another three points, another clean sheet, and the continuation of an impressive run of form.

In what proved to be a closely competitive encounter, Derby’s in-form midfielder Bradley Johnson scored the game’s decisive goal after 16 minutes – with a well taken headed finish off a Tom Ince free-kick.

The difference between the two sides proved to be Johnson’s second goal in consecutive games, following the 29-year-old’s match winning strike in last week’s 1-0 defeat of Norwich City.

Whilst Derby may have edged the first 45 (Johnny Russell almost made it 2-0 before the break), the second half certainly belonged to hosts Wigan.

The statistics show that the home side had 59% of the possession and mustered 16 shots on goal, compared to Derby’s tally of four.

However, Derby resisted Wigan’s second half pressure and secured their fifth win in a row – sending McClaren’s side into 9th position, whilst simultaneously dipping Wigan further into the Championship relegation places.
