When you are pushing for the Premier League title, sometimes you need those standout displays that will prove to be crucial to winning English football’s main crown.
If Mikel Arteta guides Arsenal to the Premier League title in May, then the performance of Jorginho during the 3-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday will be talked about.
The 32-year-old isn’t a regular starter and only started his fifth Premier League game of the season on Sunday, that’s why Dwight Yorke thinks he is ‘overlooked’ by his manager and fans.
The Manchester United legend added that Jorginho put in a ‘sensational’ performance against Liverpool and he is someone who goes ‘under the radar’ for Arsenal, as he told Premier League Productions (04/02/24 at 7:20 pm).
Last January, Arsenal brought in the out-of-favour midfielder from London rivals Chelsea. That transfer drew a mixed response because he wasn’t exactly flying high at Stamford Bridge.
But fast forward to the present and Chelsea are sitting 11th, whilst Jorginho is pushing for the Premier League title.
Dwight Yorke was keen to give the Italian midfielder his flowers for stepping up and producing the goods in such a big game for his team.
Underrated Jorginho
“You can sense that Jorginho with his experiences that comes in there, sometimes these types of performances go unstated and under the radar,” said Yorke.
“You can see how important to have such an experienced player to come in at such a crucial time, to give you that type of football, it’s balance and persistent, in terms of his play. His decision-making, leadership quality and all of those things.
“Sometimes managers, players and fans. They tend to overlook. You can see what he has brought to the team. And they needed it. They needed a good performance from him, despite not playing since November as you mentioned.
“He still came in and gave an outstanding performance in the magnitude of this type of game. Sensational!”
Will Jorginho keep his place?
Arsenal will stay in London on Sunday because they make the small trip to West Ham United – they were beaten at the London Stadium back in November in the League Cup.
Jorginho actually started that game, but inside an hour he was hooked off for Declan Rice.
Yes, the Euro 2020 was magnificent against Liverpool, but the game, and the style of it all, will be entirely different against West Ham.
Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Jorginho is rotated again, with Arsenal’s Champions League knockout campaign also re-starting this month.
You would imagine Jorginho will play a huge part in that after winning the trophy itself in Chelsea colours – it’s a trip to Portugal for the first-leg against FC Porto on February 21.
