Newcastle United have reportedly agreed a deal with Bundesliga side Mainz for their centre-forward Yoshinori Muto and been given the green light to sign him.

According to Sky Sports on their live transfer centre (9:57am, 26 July), the Magpies have agreed a £9.5million deal with the German club for their striker.

The report adds that the 26-year-old is currently en route to Tyneside ahead of his switch to St James’ Park, with the move subject to him gaining a work permit.

Muto has posted on Instagram a picture with the caption ‘see you Japan’ and that adds further support behind a move to the Premier League.

The Japan international was a part of his nation’s World Cup squad this summer and enjoyed a strong campaign domestically last season.

He scored 10 times and assisted five in just 30 games for Mainz, which suggests he could be the attacker that Newcastle are crying out for.

Rafael Benitez’s side have been heavily linked with strikers this summer and it appears like they may finally be making some progress after reaching a near-£10million agreement for a Bundesliga ace.

Muto has been a decent goalscorer in both the German and Japanese top flights, and Newcastle fans will be praying he can quickly adapt to the Premier League.
