Didier Drogba says it has been ‘difficult’ for Tottenham Hotspur target Hakim Ziyech at Graham Potter’s Chelsea this season.
In truth, that could be said since the day the Morocco international secured a big-money move to Stamford Bridge in 2020 when Frank Lampard was in the dugout.
Whilst the 29-year-old would go on to secure Champions League glory in West London, those performances that saw him become one of Europe’s top talents at Ajax, just weren’t there in the Premier League.
There is now talk of him possibly heading for the exit door during the January transfer window, with the club’s new owner Todd Boehly eager for him to move on and Spurs showcasing interest.
Nonetheless, Chelsea legend Drogba shared his thoughts on the player and how the 2022 FIFA World Cup can provide him with a chance to re-find his magic, as he told Match of the Day.
“A very difficult club season at Chelsea,” said Drogba. “It’s difficult when you know that you don’t play so many games. You don’t get the rhythm.
“It’s difficult for him, but he is getting more minutes and trying to get to his best momentum.”
ZIYECH SHINES FOR MOROCCO
On the domestic circuit, Ziyech is yet to score or assist this season, which shouldn’t be a surprise given his lack of regular minutes, rhythm, confidence and form.
But it just goes to show what putting on that shirt of your home nation can do to you.
On football’s biggest stage, Ziyech has delivered when it has matted most, as he assisted a wicked effort during Morocco’s stunning 2-0 win over Belgium at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Perhaps his performances on the world stage will elevate his status ahead of the winter transfer window opening.
