Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been chatting about who should be Arsenal’s new captain, discussing Kieran Tierney and Ben White as potential candidates.
Wright is firmly behind the idea of Tierney becoming the new skipper, stating that he’s not big on White as a leader due to the fact he doesn’t see him speaking too much on the pitch.
The Gunners’ former record goalscorer gave Tierney his backing over White due to the 24-year-old’s tendency to be quiet on the pitch.
What’s been said about Tierney and White?
Wright gave his view on who should be the next Arsenal captain, and he says it shouldn’t be White, instead, it should be Tierney.
“I’d probably go with Kieran Tierney to be honest. I know that Tavares is now someone you look at and say ‘I like him as well’, so is Kieran the out and out number one choice? Ben White? I don’t see him speaking too much,” Wright said.
“I look at Tierney and he plays and leads by example and if he’s fit, he makes every single team I pick for Arsenal simply because of the way he plays. As good as Tavares is, when you want a captain on the pitch who is not afraid to bawl into someone’s face and tell them when they’re not doing it, it’s probably Tierney who should be the next captain.”

Spot on
Wright is spot on about the Arsenal captaincy.
When you name your captain, you need a true general on the pitch. You need a player who will lead by example and will hold everyone to high standards, and unfortunately, Ben White doesn’t seem to be that player.
Now, that’s not a knock on White. Not every defender needs to be the next Tony Adams. Especially when Kieran Tierney is in the same team.
Tireney is a player who ticks almost every box as a captain, and the left-back should be very near to the top of the list of potential candidates.
