Danny Welbeck came back to haunt former club Arsenal on Wednesday night.
The England international returned to the Emirates Stadium with Brighton & Hove Albion and played his part in knocking Mikel Arteta’s side out of the Carabao Cup.
Welbeck won a first-half penalty which he himself converted to cancel out Eddie Nketiah’s excellent opener for Arsenal.
The 31-year-old was on the Gunners’ books for five years and was heckled regularly throughout his spell in North London.
And Clinton Morrison, speaking on Sky Sports News [09/11, 8:11 pm] has admitted he’s surprised to see Welbeck receive a negative reception from the Arsenal supporters.

He said: “Can he score against his old team? Some of the fans have been giving him a bit of stick. I don’t know why because he’s been outstanding, even when he was at Arsenal. Good penalty.”
Interestingly, Welbeck, who scored 32 goals in 126 appearances for the club [Transfermarkt] did not appear to celebrate against his former club as a mark of respect, which makes the jeering all the more stranger.
It was obviously a sub-par Arsenal XI which explains the below-average performance from a side that’s top of the Premier League this season.
Being eliminated from any competition is never a good thing but, on the bright side, it could be one less tournament to distract Arteta’s troops after the World Cup, which might wind up being a benefit to them.
