Donald Trump’s arrival at the New York-New Jersey stadium for the World Cup final was never going to be a quiet occasion.

Trump was in attendance for the game against Argentina and Spain, with the US president set to hand the trophy to the winner alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Given his limited, but consequential involvement in the tournament, the reaction to his appearance was always going to be interesting.

Donald Trump receives boos from World Cup final fans

Following a mix of boos and cheers for Trump at the NBA finals, it was expected that the reaction would be the same.

Long queues formed outside the stadium due to the president’s presence at the game, resulting in increased levels of security.

When he walked out onto the pitch in East Rutherford the reaction was similar the one in Madison Square Garden, which was largely boos.

In this World Cup, Trump caused controversy by directly getting involved to help get Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban overturned.

He has also had his say on certain games, predicting before the final that Lionel Messi would score the winner for Argentina.

How fans reacted to Donald Trump’s World Cup trophy presentation

Those inside the stadium booed the US president and the feeling was the same on social media.

One person said: “Why is Donald Trump on my screen. Ew yuck.”

Another added: “Donald Trump is booed by an entire stadium and keeps going as if nothing were happening. How does he manage it? Doesn’t he have any sense of honour?”

This user stated: “The entire bar I’m at is booing Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino.”
