A fascinating turn of events at the World Cup has put Donald Trump on a direct collision course with the Belgian national team.
Political and sporting tensions boiled over at the World Cup following Donald Trump’s intervention to lift Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension before the Round of 16 clash.
Furious over the perceived injustice, Belgium answered emphatically on the pitch by crushing the United States 4-1 in Seattle.
After Romelu Lukaku scored in stoppage time, several Belgian players celebrated by mockingly performing Trump’s signature campaign rally dance. The trolling escalated post-game when the official Belgian Red Devils social media account posted a picture of the celebration with the caption, “Overturn this,” directly poking fun at the World Cup controversy.
The co-hosts crash OUT of the World Cup
What will Donald Trump have to say to get them out of this one? 👀
The scenario that would see Belgium and Donald Trump face to face
Under standard FIFA hosting agreements, the head of state of the host nation is traditionally invited to participate in the closing ceremony to help hand over the World Cup trophy.
Should Belgium’s momentum carry them all the way to winning the tournament, Donald Trump would be forced into an incredibly awkward meeting with the very squad that just mocked him on the world stage.
He would have to personally stand before the Belgian team and present them with football’s ultimate prize, much like he did with Chelsea at the FIFA Club World Cup last summer.
Gianni Infantino has already confirmed the trophy situation
FIFA president Gianni Infantino addressed the possibility of Donald Trump presenting the World Cup trophy last month.
When questioned about the potential protocol nightmare, Infantino had this to say.
“We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course together.”
And when asked to clarify whether he and Trump will be presenting the trophy jointly, Infantino replied, “Of course, we are together all the time.”
