Premier League Newcastle United are once again being linked with Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost – will he finally move to St James’ Park?

It probably won’t surprise any Newcastle United fans to learn that they are once again being linked with Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost.
The rangy Dutchman has been tipped to move to St James’ Park since all the way back in 2015 when he was at Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg and this summer has once again seen the trend continue. A Bola (11th May) reports that Dost is once again on Newcastle’s radar.

This comes just a few days after manager Rafa Benitez told the Independent that he wants owner Mike Ashley to finally break the club’s 13-year-old transfer record to sign a prolific goalscorer this summer.
Considering that Ayoze Perez has been Newcastle’s most potent player this season with just six to his name, you can see where Benitez was coming from.
And Dost certainly wouldn’t come cheap. A Bola claims that Newcastle made a move last summer, only to be informed that Sporting had inserted a £53 million clause into his contract. So it will take a lot of haggling if a deal is to be reached.

But if Newcastle can finally sign Dost after three years of waiting, he could be the missing piece in The Magpies’ jigsaw. They already have a solid backline, a decent midfield and a few useful creative talents but the 28-year-old, who has 32 goals in 42 games this season, would be the icing on the cake.
Dost is an old school poacher who has tallied a remarkable 70 goals in two seasons in Portugal and could immediately turn Newcastle into a side capable of challenging for a place in Europe.
