Premier League newcomers Newcastle United were linked with Bas Dost in 2017 – and now reports are saying The Magpies decided against signing him

Newcastle United look set to remain a Premier League side next season but their likely survival is far more a result of their sturdy backline than their options in attack.
The Magpies have scored just 33 goals in 32 top flight games this season with Dwight Gayle, Aleksandar Mitrovic and, bar a recent promising run, Ayoze Perez struggling to prove they can score consistently at this level.
And, according to The Shields Gazette, manager Rafa Benitez is now already looking at players who could make the difference next season. And it remains to be seen whether the Sporting Lisbon’s 30-goal hitman Bas Dost, who is seemingly interested in a move to England, will be on the radar again.

According to the Shields Gazette, the Dutchman, who has been linked with a move to St James’ Park for many years, was a target for Newcastle last summer.
However, the North East giants decided against bringing Dost to St James’ Park – possibly due to the fact that he had a £53 million release clause in his contract, as reported by A Bola.

But it is about time that owner Mike Ashley learned that you have to spend to achieve in the Premier League.
And considering that Dost has plundered 24 goals in 24 league starts for Sporting, adding to the 34 in 30 he got last season, you wonder whether it would have taken Newcastle this secure safety had they signed this arch-poacher when they had the chance.
