Premier League duo Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal were both credited with an interest in Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

It’s a sign of the times at Wolves that they have missed out on German international Bernd Leno and it doesn’t even matter.

Fussball Transfers had claimed recently that newly promoted Wolves were in talks with the Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper, one of the most promising young shot-stoppers in European football. And Wolves fans were delighted.

After all, the fact that the Midland giants were genuinely hoping to sign Leno just highlighted how far their club had come in such a short period of time.

Wolves’ hopes were short-lived, however. Leno has joined Arsenal instead for a fee of around £20 million, making him one of the most expensive goalkeepers of all time. But Wolves, thanks to pulling off one of the summer’s most remarkable deals, should not even mind.

Just a day earlier, the Championship winners sealed the stunning swoop of Portuguese number one Rui Patricio, who arrived at Molineux from Sporting Lisbon after terminating his contract.

Now, while Leno is a raw talent, a promising goalkeeper but one who still makes a few too many mistakes, Patricio is the real deal. One of the best in the world in his position, Patricio has won over 70 caps for Portugal, starred in the Champions League and won Euro 2016.

Between Leno and Patricio, there is only one winner and he has a wolf on his shirt. Leno has a lot of developing to do and, as it stands, it seems that better goalkeeper is at Molineux.

Fans, then, should be pinching themselves right now.
