Brendan Rodgers brought Danny Ings to Liverpool in 2015 and he could get his career back on track at Celtic.

It was impossible to work out how Danny Ings would fare at Liverpool when getting his big break in the summer of 2015.

The one-time England striker had shone for Burnley in their single season in the top flight before relegation, his wily movement and sharp finishing ensuring he scored more than Reds’ forwards Rickie Lambert, Mario Balotelli, Daniel Sturridge and Fabio Borini combined in 2014/15.

Impressing in the small pond of Turf Moor is one thing though and Ings had much to prove before he could lead the line for one of Europe’s biggest clubs. Though, in a cruel twist of fate, we still have no idea whether Ings would have made the grade.

Two serious knee injuries have wrecked the 25-year-old’s career. He has not played a Premier League game since May 2016 and, according to ESPN, could leave Liverpool in January with Leeds United keen.

‘Top class’

It did not help that the man who brought Ings to Merseyside, Brendan Rodgers, was handed his P45 just a few weeks into the 2015/16 season. Though you wonder whether a reunion could be on the cards – especially after Rodgers’ current club Celtic emerged as second favourites to sign Ings in the summer, via Sky Bet.

“I think what he’s done every time he’s played is grabbed the opportunity,” Rodgers said via BleacherReport after Ings made a bright start to life at Liverpool. “He wants to get goals and I think over the next few years he’s going to develop into a top-class striker.”

Rodgers’ prophecy may not have fulfilled itself just yet but a switch to Celtic could be just what Ings needs to get his career back on track.
