If you are looking for a young, technically gifted central midfielder, Croatia is not a bad place to start looking.

Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic, Marcelo Brozovic and Milan Badelj are just some of the brilliant ball-players who have emerged from the Balkan nation in the last few years and Lovro Majer certainly has the talent to follow in their footsteps.

The 20-year-old currently plays in his homeland for NK Lokomotiva but he has been tipped to fly the nest sooner rather than later. Per Voetbal Nieuws, Scottish champions Celtic have been scouting Majer, who has 10 goals and five assists this season, ever since being first linked last summer.

Premier League duo Newcastle United and Everton are also understood to be keeping a close eye on a player who combines work-rate and energy with the ability to control a game from the centre of the park.

It is interesting to note, however, that Celtic do already have one exciting young number ten on their books – a player whose chances of a first-team berth at Parkhead would surely be damaged by Majer’s arrival.

Ryan Christie of Celtic reacts during the Pre Season Friendly match between Celtic and Leicester City at Celtic Park Stadium on July 23, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ryan Christie has spent the last 14 months on loan at rivals Aberdeen and he has been absolutely superb. After winning the club’s Young Player of the Year award last season despite only spending half the campaign at Pittodrie, the 22-year-old has kicked on with seven goals and 13 assists in all competitions while dazzling fans with his skill and unpredictability.

And Celtic fans have not been subtle in their demands for Christie to be handed a fresh start at a club who he joined from Inverness in 2015.

But if Celtic do pull off a deal for Majer, they might not get their wish with Christie. Swings and roundabouts.
