Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly willing to pay £27million to sign Denis Suarez from La Liga leaders Barcelona last year.

If Tottenham Hotspur are still keen on signing Denis Suarez, they would surely face little resistance from Barcelona this summer.

Mundo Deportivo claimed last August that Spurs had joined Serie A giants Napoli in the race for the diminutive play-maker and were even willing to pay £27 million to lure him away from the Camp Nou.

Intelligent and creative on the ball, not to mention versatile enough to play in a number of midfield positions, Suarez is certainly the sort of high-octane young talent who would have little difficulty adapting to Mauricio Pochettino’s system.

And with Barcelona needing to get rid of a couple of first-team players after paying that huge fee for Philippe Coutinho in January, the La Liga leaders would surely bite Spurs’ hand off for £27 million now.

After all, Suarez has fallen out of favour quite dramatically under Ernesto Valverde, a situation that has worsened still since Coutinho’s arrival from Liverpool.

The 24-year-old, who returned to the Camp Nou from Villarreal two years ago and inherited the number six shirt from the legendary Xavi, has only started three La Liga games this season and has been left out of the matchday squad on more than one occasion of late.

As it stands, however, it seems that Spurs are interested in a different Barcelona midfielder, AS tipping them to make a new move to the under-fire Andre Gomes after failing to bring the Portuguese to North London last summer.
