Scottish Premiership newcomers St Mirren have surprisingly got rid of Gavin Reilly, leaving League One Sunderland open to bring him to the Stadium of Light.

Jack Ross may be overjoyed to learn that his former St Mirren goal machine is now available for free.

The Mirror reported in late May that Sunderland’s new manager wanted to raid the Paisley outfit for Gavin Reilly. And Ross’s hopes have just been boosted massively by a shock development on Monday.

The Daily Record claimed that Reilly, who scored 22 goals in 44 games as St Mirren won the Championship title last season, was mulling over signing a new contract and was excited about the prospect of playing top flight football.

But new St Mirren boss Alan Stubbs has suddenly, and surprisingly, decided to rip up that offer – a call Reilly admits is disappointing.

St Mirren’s loss, however, could be Sunderland’s gain. The Chronicle is reporting that Sunderland are now likely to swoop and sign Reilly on a free. The report goes as far as to say that a move from the Wearsiders is ‘almost certain’.

25-year-old Reilly has never played in England, so it will be interesting to see whether the former Hearts man can make the transition and find goals as easy to come by as he did in Scotland’s second tier.

And Sunderland, who do not have a single senior centre-forward in their squad, will be hoping that Ross can get the best out of him once again.
