Mick McCarthy wants to remain in the Championship after leaving Ipswich Town – but could make an exception for League One Sunderland.

Could Sunderland hark back to the past to ensure a brighter future at the Stadium of Light?
The tough-talking Yorkshireman remains a popular figure in the North East after guiding Sunderland to the Championship title in 2005 – and has been installed as the early favourite with Sky Bet to take over for a second time now Chris Coleman has been sacked.

And The Chronicle is reporting that McCarthy is indeed interested in another chance at Sunderland. He believes that he has ‘unfinished business’ with a club that ended his final season in charge with what was then the lowest points tally in a single Premier League campaign.
It is understood that McCarthy would rather stay in the Championship after bringing an end to a six-year spell at Ipswich Town, but the 59-year-old would perhaps make an exception for Sunderland, who he managed between 2003 and 2006.

“I’d go back in a heartbeat because I loved my time there,” McCarthy said back in November when Sunderland sacked Simon Grayson after a dreadful start to the season.
There has been no talks yet, however, between McCarthy and the club’s new owner Stewart Donald.
