Rangers held positive talks with Scottish Premiership side Hamilton Academical regarding the potential transfer of highly-rated midfielder Greg Docherty.
Rangers will need to double their £300,000 bid to meet the asking price Hamilton have slapped on the head of midfielder Greg Docherty this month.
But it appears increasingly likely that the 21-year-old could be on the move this month, with Rangers possibly his most likely destination.
The Daily Record reports that there has been progress made in fresh talks between Hamilton and the Glasgow giants on Friday, and Docherty will now be left out of the squad to face Motherwell in the Scottish Cup this weekend as a move to Ibrox edges closer.
The Scotland under-21 international is one of Graeme Murty’s top targets during the last third of the transfer window. He starred as Hamilton beat Rangers 2-0 in November and fans made clear at the time that they would welcome Docherty to Ibrox with open arms.
And it appears that they will get their wish.
Docherty is set to become Rangers’ sixth signing of a busy transfer window, following Russell Martin, Jamie Murphy, Sean Goss and Jason Cummings, while Declan John’s loan deal from Cardiff City was made permanent.
Rangers also appear to have beaten English opposition to Docherty’s signature. The Daily Record stated this week that Preston North End were keen, while Cardiff City (according to The Sun, 14th January, page 59) were also in the race with manager Neil Warnock a big fan.
