Back in March, the Independent claimed that Celtic were interested in snapping up Yeovil Town’s highly-rated right-back Tom James.

And, four months on, it seems growing interest south of the border has encouraged the Scottish Premiership champions to step up their pursuit of the 22-year-old Welshman.

HITC sources told us on Thursday that Championship duo Swansea and Hull City were interested, but the Daily Record is now claiming that Celtic will fight it out to sign James before the transfer window slams shut next month.

It is understood that the Hoops have continued to keep tabs on the former Cardiff City youngster with Brendan Rodgers eager to add some defensive cover at right-back. James has just one year left on his contract and Yeovil, the report adds, want to cash in to avoid losing their prize asset on a free with clubs from the Championship already making contact.

James, who has played twice for Wales at U19 level, featured 38 times for Yeovil in League Two last season. He also stood out in the January FA Cup clash with Manchester United, restricting Alexis Sanchez to a bit-part role in proceedings on the Chilean’s Red Devils’ debut.

James would be expected to add as a backup to the experienced Mikael Lustig while perhaps bringing an end to Cristian Gamboa’s Celtic career.
