West Brom refused to let Sam Field leave for Championship trio Sunderland, Norwich City or Derby County, so what chance do Birmingham have?

Sam Field’s opportunities at West Bromwich Albion have stalled somewhat since Alan Pardew replaced Tony Pulis at The Hawthorns.

The highly-rated midfielder, who emerged from the Baggies’ academy and has been tipped to be a future England international, has not played a single minute of Premier League football in five weeks.

But that does not mean West Brom are receptive to loan offers to take Field away from The Hawthorns this month.

HITC sources told us on Tuesday that Championship trio Sunderland, Derby County and Norwich City were all hoping to sign the 19-year-old on a temporary deal until the end of the season, but it is understood that Pardew wants to keep him in and around the first-team picture.

The chances of Birmingham City striking a deal with their Midland rivals, then, appear slim.

According to The Mail (live transfer blog, 1.34pm), Birmingham have joined the queue of second tier clubs enquiring about Field with manager Steve Cotterill aiming to enhance his options ahead of what is likely to be a difficult fight against relegation.

But if West Brom were unwilling to let Field leave for Sunderland, Norwich or Derby, there is no particular reason why they should look at Birmingham’s interest any differently.

A number of talented players have risen through the ranks at West Brom in recent years but, unlike Chris Wood, Romaine Sawyers or Kemar Roofe, it seems Field has a genuine chance of securing a first-team place.
