Glasgow Rangers want to lure Greg Docherty to Ibrox from Hamilton Academical, but Cardiff City will offer him a chance in the Championship.

Hamilton Academical may be struggling in the Scottish Premiership this season but Greg Docherty has still stood out in style.

So much so that The Accies may struggle to hold on to the 21-year-old beyond this month. Because STV report that Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers are keen to lure Docherty to Ibrox, while Championship promotion chasers Cardiff City are willing to hand him an opportunity south of the border.

Despite a run of four straight defeats around the festive period, Cardiff are still well placed to fight for a place in the Premier League next season. Neil Warnock’s side are just two points behind Derby County in the automatic promotion positions.

But would Rangers be the better destination for one of the rising stars in Scottish football? Supporters have taken to Twitter in recent weeks, clamouring for the club to take an interest in Hamilton’s highly-rated midfielder, so if Docherty does move to Ibrox he would be welcomed with open arms.

And while Rangers are not short of options in central midfield, the sight of Graeme Murty on the touchline should give the Scotland Under-21 star confidence that he would get opportunities at one of the nation’s biggest clubs.

Murty was promoted to the top job after working with the club’s academy, after all, and has no fears about putting his trust in young players. Ross McCrorie and David Bates seem to be a big part of his plans while Sean Goss, a 20-year-old midfielder, recently arrived from QPR.

It remains to be seen, however, whether the lure of fighting for a place in the Premier League proves too strong for Docherty to resist.
