Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and Ostersunds boss Graham Potter have been tipped to take over at Scottish Premiership giants Rangers.

Steven Gerrard of BT Sport looks on during the Emirates FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on May 27, 2017 in London, England.

There is a new frontrunner to take over at Rangers this summer – and it’s not exactly a name many were expecting.

According to The Sun, none other than Steven Gerrard is in talks to take over at Ibrox this summer in what would be one of the most remarkable managerial appointments anywhere in Britain over the last couple of years.

Gerrard has been coaching the Liverpool U18s since his retirement in 2016, and doing a good job too, but he has absolutely no managerial experience at the top level – let alone at a side as demanding and historic as Glasgow Rangers.

But the 37-year-old is not the only surprising, rather left-wing candidate. Earlier this week, Ostersunds boss Graham Potter became the 7/2 favourite with Sky Bet.

Now, Potter’s work with Ostersunds has gone down in legend, taking the Swedish minnows from the third tier to the knockout round of the Europa League, but the 42-year-old too has never coached a club of Rangers’ stature and would represent another major gamble.

And after the disastrous reign of Pedro Caixinha and the rather mixed results garnered by Graeme Murty, should Rangers really consider another experimental appointment – one that would look very embarrassing if it blew up in their face?

Pedro Caixinha poses with a team shirt after he is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers at Ibrox Stadium on March 13, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

A more experienced, proven manager like Steve Clarke, Alex Neil or even Neil Warnock would perhaps stand a better chance of galvanising a talented yet haphazard group of players who have the raw materials to challenge at the top of the Scottish game but perhaps not the leadership or the direction.

After Murty and Caixinha, now is the time to look for a manager who has been there and done it at a respectable level, like Brendan Rodgers was for Celtic.

Gerrard, and Potter, are massive risks that, right now, possibly aren’t worth taking.
