The Middlesbrough midfielder has admitted that he would be interested in making the step up with Everton.

It is probably not the best idea to admit ahead of a clash with a league rival that you quite fancy the idea of pulling on the shirt of the opposition in the near future.

However, that did not stop Middlesbrough’s tough tackling Marten De Roon claiming that a move to Everton, who endured a goalless stalemate at the Riverside on Saturday, would be the next logical step in his career.

“I am ambitious. I won’t get to play for Manchester City, or another club among the top five in England,” the Dutch midfielder said in quotes reported by the Sun.

“But I do think that I can develop myself to the level needed to play for a club like Everton.

“But there is a long way for me to go. I first need to become the best player at Middlesbrough – that is the next step for me.”

Middlesbrough's Marten de Roon scores their first goal

De Roon has already seized the hearts of Boro supporters for his committed displays and down-to-earth attitude off the pitch though how long he remains on Riverside is anyone’s guess. If the North East club suffer an immediate, albeit unlikely, return to the second tier, De Roon would surely be handed a top flight reprieve.

Problem position? Surprise star’s Everton performances shielding Koeman from criticism

And a player nicknamed ‘The Beast of Bergamo’ for his monstrous performances in midfield for Atalanta could prove an astute addition for an Everton side managed by compatriot Ronald Koeman. De Roon’s blend of tenacity and technique would no doubt appeal to the straight-talking manager.

Then again, the Toffees already possess their very own ankle-biting midfield terrier in Idrissa Gana Gueye. The former Aston Villa powerhouse, something of an N’Golo Kante lite, has been one of the most astute signings of the season.

And statistically speaking, Gueye beats De Roon hands down in almost every category. His defensive contribution is much higher while the former offers a forward thrust that the latter cannot match.

Maybe De Roon should concentrate on keeping Boro up for now.
