The sight of Charlie Wyke suffering what looks like a serious knee injury in the 2-1 defeat to Burton Albion on Saturday understandably has manager Jack Ross worried.

The former Bradford City target-man is Sunderland’s number one striker and there is a lack of real options in reserve. It remains to be seen, then, whether the Black Cats should have offered Kacper Przybylko a contract after all.

The Polish-born German was on trial at Sunderland back in August and confirmed on his official Instagram that he would ‘give everything’ to earn a contract with the club. ‘It would be an honour’, Pryzbylko said.

But Sunderland passed up the chance to sign the 25-year-old, who had spent his entire career in Germany with the likes of Cologne and Kaiserslautern. But Przybylko’s latest trial has proven to be far more successful.

After impressing over a short spell, the 6ft 4ins centre-forward has signed a contract with MLS side Philadelphia Union and will now look to prove a point to Sunderland across the Atlantic.

“He is a physical forward with a nose for goal,” said technical director Chris Albright.

Standing at 6ft 4ins, Przybylko could have been the ideal replacement for Wyke should Sunderland be without their key man for the next few weeks or even months.
