League One promotion hopefuls Sunderland were interested in taking Cameron John on loan from Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers in June.
There’s only so much a young player can learn from the sterilised environment of youth team football. And, after helping Wolves’ U23 side reach the top of the Premier League 2 table, it seems that Cameron John is ready to try his hand in the unforgiving world of senior, professional football.
The Mail reports that the 19-year-old defender is being targeted by clubs in the Football League with Wolverhampton Wanderers considering whether to loan him out in the January transfer window.
And it would be little surprise if a Sunderland side who had expressed an interest back in June, according to HITC sources, made a move again.
We were told that Sunderland had been tracking the teenage former Sheffield United defender for some time and John would fit in perfectly under Jack Ross at the Stadium of Light, on paper at least.
Throughout his budding managerial career, Ross has shown a commendable faith in youth, making Lewis Morgan and Stevie Mallan key players at St Mirren before trusting the likes of Denver Hume, George Honeyman and Josh Maja at Sunderland.
So Wolves could almost guarantee that John would benefit from working under Ross at the Stadium of Light.
And while John has been playing at centre-back for the U23s, he is more than capable of filling in at left-back too, potentially providing Sunderland with an option should they cash in on the high-earning Bryan Oviedo in the New Year.
