Goalkeeper Danny Ward enjoyed a dream debut for Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, will Premier League giants Liverpool regret letting him go?
A number of Liverpool fans took to Twitter on Tuesday to ask why their club let Danny Ward go.
The highly-rated goalkeeper was sold to Leicester City this summer for £12.5million, a deal that made real financial sense given that he had only ever made three appearances for the Merseyside giants.
From a footballing perspective, however, cashing in on a highly-rated young goalkeeper with the world at his feet could come back to bite Jurgen Klopp. Ward certainly showcased his potential in midweek, saving three penalties in a dramatic shoot-out victory against Wolves in the EFL Cup.
And, speaking to the Leicester Mercury, the Wales international has now shone a light on why he felt he’d be better off at the King Power than Anfield.
“I’m a young goalkeeper who wants to play football and I thought I’d have more opportunity to play at this great football club than I would have at Liverpool,” the former Aberdeen and Huddersfield loanee said.
“I’ve not been surprised how big the club is. I’ve enjoyed every minute and hopefully we can have more nights like tonight.”
So far, however, you could argue Ward has not exactly reaped the rewards of swapping Liverpool for Leicester.
That cup clash at Molineux was only the 25-year-old’s first appearance since signing for The Foxes with the consistent Kasper Schmeichel still Claude Puel’s undisputed number one.
Then again, ousting Schmeichel could be a more realistic ambition than forcing his way past Alisson Becker and Simon Mignolet.
