Could Leeds solve goalkeeping problem by bringing Alex Cairns back?

Championship promotion chasers Leeds United are suddenly in need of a goalkeeper after Chelsea loanee Jamal Blackman suffered a broken leg.

The goalkeeping situation at Leeds United has been the subject of much debate in recent weeks.

Firstly, there was that torrid evening for Bailey Peacock-Farrell in Leeds’ 4-1 hammering at West Brom before the international break. And now Jamal Blackman’s loan spell at Elland Road could be brought to an end after just two games with the Chelsea shot-stopper suffering a broken leg in the U23 clash with Birmingham City on Friday.

It seems unlikely right now that Blackman will play for Leeds again.

Suddenly, a replacement is needed. Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to clamour for the likes of Kieren Westwood (below) and David Stockdale, who were both linked with moves to West Yorkshire in the summer.

But how about bringing back a player who knows life at Leeds like the back of his hand?

Alex Cairns spent four years with The Whites before being released in 2015 – but the current Fleetwood Town stopper should be at the top of Leeds’ wish list with a replacement for Blackman needed heading into the January transfer window.

Now 25, Cairns has really stood out since dropping down to League One with Fleetwood Town and, just a year ago, was linked with a move to the Premier League via West Ham (The Mail), so impressive was his form in the third tier.

And the Doncaster-born stopper would surely relish the chance to prove himself during a second chance at Leeds. He’d be cheaper than Westwood, Stockdale and co, and would be more of a long-term option too.
