Speculation rose about the Celtic’s head of recruitment Lee Congerton on Tuesday – is the former Sunderland man staying with the Scottish Premiership side?

Celtic were warned about Lee Congerton.

Back in May 2017, The Hoops appointed Congerton (above, second left) as their new head of recruitment but a far from convincing spell as Sunderland’s sporting director meant he moved north of the border with his credentials under question.

Reacting on Twitter, Sunderland fans were thrilled to see Congerton go with the alleged transfer expert hardly popular on Wearside for a series of ill-fated signings.

And, a year-and-a-half on, it seems that Congerton is proving equally unpopular amid some sections of the Celtic support.

It’s fair to say the likes of Jonny Hayes and Kundai Benyu have been far from a roaring success at Parkhead while the less said about Marvin Compper (above), the £1 million defender who has played once in 11 months, the better.

Now, speculation intensified on Tuesday night suggesting that Congerton was set for the exit but The Mail (12 December, page 52) has now pointed out that these reports are premature with the transfer chief still in a job.

And, while Congerton deserves credit for signings like Odsonne Edouard and Filip Benkovic, the reaction to this news speaks volumes.
