West Brom defender Craig Dawson looks set to leave when The Baggies are relegated from the Premier League, but will he join Celtic?
Mikael Lustig is celebrating his seventh straight Scottish Premiership title in a trophy laden Celtic career.
But yet more silverware should not distract from what has been a difficult season on an individual basis for the 31-year-old at Parkhead. Lustig has frequently found himself the subject of criticism for a series of poor displays on the right-hand side of Celtic’s defence.
And though the Swedish international still has another year on his contract, it makes sense now for Brendan Rodgers to start looking for a long-term replacement to one of the club’s most loyal servants over the last decade.
The 28-year-old is likely to leave The Baggies should they finally be relegated from the Premier League this week with Burnley, Wolves and West Ham United already linked. And though Dawson moved to The Hawthorns initially as a centre-half, he has established himself as a more than capable right-back in recent seasons.
Though Celtic need additions in the centre of their defence, particularly with Jozo Simunovic and Dedryck Boyata facing uncertain futures, Dawson has the versatility to become the club’s first-choice right-back too should Lustig depart in a year’s time.
Like Lustig, Dawson is a tall and physical defender who has the technique and crossing ability to be an attacking outlet too.
Though West Brom would surely have to lower their £15 million asking price for Celtic to stand a chance.
