A red card in Celtic’s Europa League defeat to Valencia sums up how it has gone for the Borussia Dortmund loanee recently.

Jeremy Toljan could hardly have made a more impressive start to life at Celtic.
A long-awaited deadline day signing from Borussia Dortmund in January, the Germany U21 international turned heads immediately with some hugely impressive performances in the green and white stripes.
Toljan, a rampaging right-back blessed with a terrific crossing ability, even produced an assist on his debut against St Johnstone in February. But it seems that the 24-year-old has been unable to maintain those stand-out performances.
Reacting on Twitter, Borussia Dortmund fans warned Celtic that, while Toljan has plenty of potential, he was far from the finished product. The former Hoffenheim defender didn’t make a single Bundesliga appearance in the first half of the season under coach Lucien Favre and maybe The Hoops are now finding out why.

While Toljan is still a big threat going forward, his lack of defensive awareness has attracted plenty of criticism in recent weeks. He was a walking red card in the Europa League clash with Valencia and it came as a surprise to no one when he was eventually sent off in the first-half, costing his side the chance of progression.
Since then, Toljan has looked increasingly shaky and looked like the weak link again in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Aberdeen.
Maybe he is not the answer to Celtic’s right-back problems after all.
