Sunderland should consider a move for free-agent David Meyler, who left the club in 2013 in order to move to Hull City.

David Meyler of Hull City arrives at the stadium prior to the Premier League match between Hull City and Burnley at KCOM Stadium on February 25, 2017 in Hull, England.

David Meyler was released by Hull City last week and would be a steal on a free transfer for League One side Sunderland.

The 28-year-old has been linked to Championship side Reading, but would be an excellent addition to what will be a new-look Sunderland squad.

Despite new owner Stewart Donald claiming his new club will have a ‘hefty transfer budget’, the Black Cats will still need to be on the lookout for some free transfers – and Meyler would be one that satisfies the needs of the Wearside club.

Meyler only made 25 appearances for Sunderland in his five years in the North East, but has since been a regular fixture with Hull City in the Championship.

The Irishman is a box-to-box midfielder with presence and would certainly chip in with goals for the Black Cats, like he did for Hull City last season.

Meyler scored some important goals that ultimately helped keep the Tigers in the Championship last season, netting five goals – even though he was injured for parts of the campaign.

Not only would Meyler offer goals, the midfielder would offer some much-needed experience and know how to some of the younger members of the squad who will likely feature in League One.

And despite Meyler’s previous stint on Wearside being underwhelming – he would be a smart addition to Sunderland’s squad for what will undoubtedly be a gruelling campaign in the third tier.
