FC Volendam director Jasper Van Leeuwen is delighted to finally sign Oskar Buur from Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers, telling the club’s website that he’s been tracking the defender ‘for a long time’.

A lot has changed at Molineux since a teenage Buur made his first-team debut in September 2017.

Nuno Espirito Santo was clean shaven back then, for a start. And, in a rather forgettable EFL Cup tie with Bristol Rovers, a Wolves side containing Roderick Miranda and Michal Zyro needed extra time before a Bright Enobakhare winner saw off their lower league opponents.

Buur started at right-wing back that night, stepping in for Matt Doherty as Nuno shuffled his pack.

The Denmark U19 international may have been hoping that this would be something of a breakthrough moment in his Wolves’ career. If so, he was sadly mistaken.

Will Oskar Buur win the league months after leaving Wolves?

Buur said goodbye to life at Molineux last week, his contract torn up after making just five further appearances in Old Gold.

Not that the 23-year-old has had to wait too long to find employment elsewhere.

“It is no secret that we’ve been interested in Oskar for a long time,” says Van Leeuwen, his delight palpable after landing Buur at last.

“Previously, a transfer was not possible. And it was a very nice surprise when it turned out that he was available.

“Oskar is a skilled and, above all, intelligent player. One we expect will be comfortable in our playing system. He has a natural urge to push forward and good vision in the final third.

“We look forward to helping Oskar further his development.”

FC Volendam are currently five points clear at the top of the table. Buur could help the northern-based club return to the Eredivisie after over a decade in the second tier.

“I am very happy to be here in Volendam,” he says. “It’s a very exciting project here and I can’t wait to be part of this journey.”
