Tottenham Hotspur have snapped up Ashley Phillips with Blackburn Rovers admitting that this was a difficult sale.
Blackburn Rovers lost wonderkid defender Ashley Phillips to Tottenham Hotspur in a ‘difficult’ transfer.
Tottenham finally managed to bring Phillips to North London after a fairly lengthy chase.
The Daily Mail reported in August of 2022 that Tottenham were closing in on signing Phillips.
The defender ended up staying with Blackburn though, featuring in 14 first-team games last season.
Spurs have got their man in the end though, securing Phillips in a deal worth around £2million following some bizarre haggling.
Gregg Broughton reacts to Ashley Phillips deal
It was suggested that Spurs were close to a £5million deal before Rovers allegedly doubled the asking price.
That decision backfired as a release clause came into effect, meaning Tottenham got Phillips for even cheaper than expected.
Blackburn sporting director Gregg Broughton has now commented on Phillips and his move to Tottenham.
Speaking to The Lancashire Telegraph, Broughton admitted that the deal was ‘difficult’ because of the release clause factor.
Broughton claims that Phillips wanted to leave last summer but Rovers convinced him to stay by putting a number of clauses into a new contract offer.

The release clause has been described as ‘one of the most complicated’ ever seen, with Tottenham taking full advantage.
Broughton added that the value of the release clause could have been higher if Phillips played more games last season, but the club decided to go in a different direction.
“It was difficult but not unexpected,” said Broughton. “When I came into the building, I was told it was a player who wasn’t prepared to sign a contract. We spent a lot of time and energy convincing the player to sign that contract. Under the current football rules, whether we like it or not, he was a scholar, he hadn’t signed a professional contract. He could exercise a seven-day notice on that scholarship to leave the club on a tribunal fee which was likely to be about £200,000.”
“In order to do so, we had to put various clauses in it to get him to sign the deal. One of those was a very complicated release clause, described by our legal team as one of the most complicated they had ever worked on. It had various different triggers and we got to a situation in Easter where we knew he had to play a certain number of games more in order to take that to the next price level.”
“We sat down as a Board of Directors and with Jon as head coach and we were completely unanimous that Jon, at that stage of the season, had to be able to pick the strongest team available. Ash had to play his way into the team and not be selected because of a clause triggered higher money. We understand that we could’ve triggered more money by him playing. That wasn’t, by the way, one or two substitute appearances, he had to play a number of minutes to trigger that. Throwing him on for the last five minutes wouldn’t have done that,” he added.

Tottenham building exciting defence for the future
Phillips has enormous potential and could become a first-team star at Tottenham.
We’re even already hearing that Ange Postecoglou has been hugely impressed with Phillips.
Spurs now appear to be building quite the back line for the future.
Alfie Dorrington is emerging as a real talent with the 18-year-old already training with Tottenham’s first team.
Tottenham are also set to sign Hajduk Split teenager Luka Vuskovic, who will arrive in 2025 as one of the top teenage defenders in Europe.
Add in that Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven should have their best years ahead of them and Spurs seem pretty well set up for the future.
