Barcelona midfielder Riqui Puig has said that he is happy at the club, amid links with Leeds United, as quoted on BeSoccer.

90min reported in November 2020 that Leeds have been offered the chance to sign Puig on loan from Barcelona in the January transfer window.

Earlier this month, the youngster signed a new contract with Barcelona that will see him stay at Camp Nou until the summer of 2023.

The 21-year-old had been struggling for playing time, but he came on as a substitute against Elche in La Liga at the weekend and scored the second goal in the 2-0 win.

The Spanish youngster said after the game that although it has not been easy for him this season, he will keep on fighting for his place in the team.

Puig said, as quoted on BeSoccer, and transcribed by Barcacentre: “The last time that I scored a goal with my head I was still playing for Cadete A. It’s a difficult year for me when it comes to minutes, but I’m strong-minded. I’m happy with how my teammates are helping me.

“We are taking steps forward. It’s a tough month because we play a lot of games away from home. These victories help us a lot. As my father says, I have to keep fighting and learning. All this makes me stronger as a player.”

No Leeds United transfer in January?

Puig signing a new contract does not mean that Barcelona will not allow him to leave on loan, but at this stage of the January transfer window, it does seem unlikely.

With Barca now just three points behind second-placed Real Madrid, manager Ronald Koeman will want to keep his squad strong and all of his players available.

According to WhoScored, Puig has played just 25 minutes in La Liga and only 74 minutes in the Champions League so far this season.

Leeds do have a very good midfield department, and Puig would struggle to play regularly for the Premier League club.
