Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has had to endure his fair share of criticism of late.

Reds legend Didi Hamann explained how it was ‘madness’ for his former club to reward Jürgen Klopp with a six-year contract in the summer, when speaking to the Times, highlighting how a culture seems to have developed in England where it is ok to fail, unlike in Germany.

Liverpool are currently in the midst of a worryingly poor run of form, having dropped out of both cup competitions, and failing to win any of their last five Premier League games.

Klopp was seen as the messiah when he was appointed as Reds boss in October 2015, with his energetic displays on the touchline injecting a much needed spark into the Merseyside outfit.

But following their recent struggles, the German has had questions asked about his ability, for the first time since his arrival at Anfield.

And Hamann spoke to the Times regarding Liverpool’s dip in form, questioning the wisdom behind his former club giving Klopp such a long-term contract:

“In England it can be OK to fail, in Germany it never is. I like Klopp, but they lost two finals last season, so I’d be careful. I wouldn’t have given him a six-year contract. That’s absolute madness. They won’t win anything this year and they may not finish top four.”

The Reds’ season is far from over, however, and with a long way still to go, Klopp has plenty of time to turn around his side’s slump.

And if he can guide them to a top four finish and Champions League football, that will surely be considered as a success, in the long-term process of rebuilding one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
