Derek Johnstone has suggested in The Glasgow Evening Times that Joey Barton does not have a future at Rangers.
Barton is on the books of Scottish giants Rangers at the moment and has a contract with the Gers until June 2018, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.
The former Newcastle United midfielder joined Mark Warburton’s side in the summer transfer window after leaving Burnley at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
The Englishman arrived at Ibrox with a strong reputation, but the 34-year-old has failed to make a huge impact so far.
Rangers’ Joey Barton looks dejected
Barton has not played well for Rangers so far this season, and he is now serving a three-week suspension.
As announced on the Scottish Premiership club’s official website on Monday, the Englishman has been suspended for three weeks.
Barton told talkSPORT last week about a training ground bust-up between him and Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday.
The former Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers midfielder recently claimed on Twitter that he will remain at Ibrox for the rest of the season (click here to read more).
Rangers’ Joey Barton
Former Rangers star Johnstone, who is 62 years of age, believes that Barton does not have a future at Ibrox.
“I said when he arrived that it looked to be a good move for Rangers and you can see why he was signed,” Johnstone wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times.
“He had a great season with Burnley last year and the fans were excited to see him in action at Ibrox.
“But I think he saw Scottish football as a walk in the park. He has said that the game here is poor, well he made it poorer because he never improved the level.
“I can’t see him coming back and I don’t think the majority of fans would accept him. I would be very surprised if he kicks another ball for Rangers.”
Rangers are fifth in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with nine points from six matches, four points behind leaders Celtic, who have a game in hand.
