Trinity Rodman has explained her decision to sign a record-breaking contract with the Washington Spirit, becoming the highest-paid player in women’s football history.

Trinity Rodman finalised a new three-year deal worth more than $1 million per season to remain with the National Women’s Soccer League side. Trinity is the daughter of NBA legend Dennis Rodman.

However, the two have a strained relationship, as Rodman has distanced herself from the five-time NBA champion while building her own path in professional football, where she just made history.

Trinity Rodman on why she chose to stay in Washington

Speaking after the announcement, Trinity Rodman said her decision was driven by loyalty and a connection to the team that helped shape her career.

Rodman said her new deal symbolises more than financial growth, calling it a breakthrough for women’s football.

“Developing and maturing and learning and failing at Spirit and in D.C. has become so much of my legacy and my story. It’s mind-blowing to me… I’ve done so much in this time of still being so young.”

“This is a game-changing moment… opening opportunities for American girls with dreams,” she said. “I’m proud to represent that progress.”

Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang described Rodman as “the blueprint” for the next generation of athletes, crediting her professionalism and influence across the league.

Kang was instrumental in fast-tracking the High Impact Player rule to secure Rodman’s future amid growing European interest.

Record deal marks new era for women’s football

The contract makes Trinity Rodman the world’s highest-paid women’s footballer, surpassing previous records held in Europe.

Reports confirmed she will earn more than $1 million per year under the new agreement, which was finalised during a ceremony in Los Angeles.

Rodman joined the Washington Spirit in 2021 as the league’s youngest-ever draft pick and has since become one of its standout players.

Her achievements include an Olympic gold medal and the 2021 NWSL Rookie of the Year award, establishing her as one of the sport’s most marketable stars.

The new contract marks a major milestone for the NWSL as it looks to retain homegrown talent in competition with Europe’s biggest clubs.
