Shaquille O’Neal once came close to throwing punches at Dennis Rodman during one of the most physical playoff battles of the 1990s.
The heated rivalry between the two Hall of Famers peaked during the 1996 NBA Eastern Conference Finals, when O’Neal’s Orlando Magic clashed with Rodman’s Chicago Bulls.
Both players were known for their strength and intensity, but Rodman’s trademark mind games and physical defense pushed even Shaq to his limits.
The series, remembered for its fierce confrontations, produced one of O’Neal’s most memorable postgame reactions.

Shaquille O’Neal admits Dennis Rodman “almost got” to him
After a bruising Game 3 matchup, O’Neal admitted that Rodman’s tactics tested his patience more than most defenders could.
“Rodman doesn’t get under my skin. I just have to protect myself. If he’d have got under my skin, I’d start throwing punches. He’s chippy,” O’Neal said.
O’Neal’s comments came after several tense moments between the two during the game, including hard fouls, shoves under the basket, and verbal exchanges that nearly escalated. While Shaq held his composure, he made it clear that Rodman’s relentless play had him on edge.
At the time, Rodman’s defense was instrumental in limiting Orlando’s offense, and his ability to frustrate opposing stars was one of his defining traits throughout his career.
Dennis Rodman’s defiant response to Shaquille O’Neal
Rodman was never one to back down, and he certainly didn’t after hearing O’Neal’s postgame warning. “If he’s going to throw punches, throw punches,” Rodman said after being informed of O’Neal’s comments.
He added: “I don’t care. It’s more than just having money. It’s more than just having fame. It’s more than glitz and glamour.”
The Bulls went on to sweep the Magic 4–0, advancing to the NBA Finals and eventually capturing the championship.
For Rodman, the encounter with O’Neal added another chapter to his legacy as one of basketball’s greatest agitators, and for Shaq, it served as proof that even the most dominant big man in the game could be rattled by Rodman’s chaos.
Decades later, both players have spoken with mutual respect about that era, but the tension from those series remains part of NBA playoff lore, where tempers, pride, and toughness defined champions.
