Newcastle United defender DeAndre Yedlin has told the Chronicle that that Obafemi Martins recommended a move to St. James’ Park last summer.
Yedlin moved to Tyneside from Tottenham Hotspur in 2016, despite interest from Premier League clubs.

And Yedlin says that Martins’ positive words about Newcastle were crucial in him making the switch.

“I spoke to Obafemi Martins before I made the move to Newcastle,” Yedlin said.
“He actually spoke to me a bit about Newcastle before I even came over to Europe.
“Oba was speaking about how much he enjoyed it here at this club so Newcastle were always in the back of my head.

“He was the one who really looked after me when I was in Seattle so it’s cool that we both have this connection now.”
Martins played for Newcastle between 2006 and 2009, and he scored 28 goals in 88 league appearances.

Yedlin has certainly made a positive start to his Newcastle career, with his rampaging performances at right-back catching the eye.
The American international has added attacking threat to Newcastle’s team, and also remained solid defensively.
Yedlin appears to have established himself as the Magpies’ first-choice right-back, forcing Vurnon Anita out of the team.
Newcastle are next in action on Saturday, when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
