Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Jesse Lingard would “love” to join Tottenham this summer – but the free agent is reportedly close to completing a return to West Ham after his loan spell with the Hammers in 2020-21.
Lingard, 29, is currently in the US amid interest from MLS clubs. But his future looks destined to be in the Premier League, especially with the 2022 World Cup on the horizon. He is a free agent after leaving Manchester United.
Reports earlier this week stated that Lingard was set to pick West Ham. Such a move would see him return to the Hammers after his successful loan last year, in which he had a hand in 14 goals during 16 appearances.

That is, despite his stance on Tottenham – according to Jones. The transfer expert says Lingard would love to join a club like Tottenham that are competing for a place in the top four and have Champions League football.
“Lingard would love a club of that level, but only if he can sense a big role within that team and I’m not sure I see Jesse Lingard playing a big part in Tottenham’s team given what we’ve already seen from this summer,” Jones said.
Jones: Lingard would love to join Tottenham
Lingard would be a smart move from Spurs. A homegrown talent, supposedly in the prime of his career and with plenty of Champions League experience. But there are three issues regarding such a move.
Firstly, his game time would not mirror the wages he is said to be demanding – £150,000 a week. Secondly, is where would he play in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3? Naturally, he is a playmaker. And finally, West Ham is better suited.
