Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, David Ornstein has been discussing Arsenal’s move for Jorginho on deadline day.

According to Ornstein, the arrival of Jorginho was directly related to the failure of Arsenal to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton.

Arsenal had been pursuing the ‘incredible’ midfielder for some time, but a deal for the highly-rated youngster failed to materialize on deadline day.

This left the Gunners scrambling to bring in a backup option, and they ended up settling for Jorginho, who was available from Chelsea.

Sky Sports had reported that Jorginho wasn’t a Caicedo alternative, but Ornstein says this isn’t the case.

He claims that the club had been monitoring both players for a while and only made a move for Jorginho because they couldn’t land Caicedo.

Jorginho signed after missing out on Caicedo

Ornstein shared what he knows about this situation.

“It was more of a reaction to missing out on Moises Caicedo. Although it’s not a like-for-like replacement it was conceivable that Jorginho would move because he’s out of contract in the summer and there were no talks about a new deal. He’s a player Arsenal have liked for a long time and they tried to sign him previously,” Ornstein said.

Not a long-term alternative

It’s clear that Arsenal were hoping to sign a midfielder with a bit of creativity and guile, and they got that in the shape of Jorginho.

However, at the age of 31, the Italian isn’t a long-term solution to any midfield problems at Arsenal

One has to imagine that the Gunners will be back in the market for a midfielder in the summer, and Declan Rice has been touted as a top target, while Caicedo remains a player of interest.

Ornstein’s latest update has provided an insight into Arsenal’s deadline day dealings and shed light on the club’s strategy in the transfer market. It’s fair to assume that the Gunners are still looking to add more quality and creativity to their midfield, and it will be interesting to see whether they will be able to secure the services of Caicedo in the future.
