Former Rangers chairman Dave King has admitted that it will be “really difficult” for the Light Blues to reach the Champions League group stage this season – but insists it is a “great challenge” for the Gers to try and make it through two rounds of qualifying.
Steven Gerrard’s side enter at the third qualifying round of the competition this season and will need to get through that and the playoff round to secure the riches that come with a place in the groups.
King knows it will be easier next season with the Scottish champions assured a place in the groups but hopes the Gers are ready to face whatever challenges come their way this year if they are to make it through.
“It’s really difficult to qualify for the Champions League this season,” King told the Scottish Sun.
“The following year will be easier because the coefficient is improving and there is direct access.
“It’s great to be back there but it’s going to be a great challenge to get through the qualifying.
“I’m hoping the guys will get their business done early again and get the squad up and ready to meet whatever challenges come along in the knockout ties.”
Rangers have proven they can reach the Champions League groups
After reaching the last 16 of the Europa League in successive seasons, there’s no reason for Rangers to think making the groups of the Champions League is beyond them.

While it will be a much tougher task than reaching the Europa groups, some of the teams in qualifying have been beaten by this Rangers side in recent seasons.
Making sure the Gers hit the ground running after the summer break is key but with an extended break compared to recent campaigns, Rangers should be in a good place ahead of the competitive action getting started.
