Tottenham Hotspur have some of the most exciting players at their disposal in the Premier League.

When you have a manager like Ange Postecoglou in the dugout, then you are going to get that because his style of play is as expansive and unorthodox as it gets.

Tottenham’s high line means that their defensive line has to defend a lot of open space and that requires a special set of skills for their back four, especially the centre-backs because it can go to the ‘extreme’ at times.

Postecoglou booted out Eric Dier in January and during his two transfer windows in charge so far, he has brought in a certain type of centre-back.

The first to enter the building was the speed machine Micky van de Ven, who won over many hearts, including some thinking he was their ‘Player of the Season’.

Then Tottenham turned to Radu Dragusin in January and he impressed during Romania’s stunning 3-0 win over Ukraine at Euro 2024 on Monday.

Spurs fans are still trying to work out what type of player he is, but they learnt a whole lot during his nation’s stunning Euro 2024 opener.

Whilst Danny Murphy praised the all-action centre-back for his performance by stating that he was ‘outstanding’, he also delivered some bizarre criticism, as he told BBC One on Match of the Day.

The former midfielder didn’t like the fact that Dragusin celebrated a block when his team were winning 3-0.

The Tottenham man blocked a cross from going towards the centre of the penalty box, but Murphy thinks ‘you shouldn’t be celebrating doing your job that much’.

“Joking aside, his performance deserves plaudits because he was outstanding,” said Murphy. “Tottenham fans watching that will be really pleased because they haven’t seen much of him and his capability is there. He is perfect for the Premier League. He epitomised everything good about Romania.

“I don’t think you should be celebrating doing your job that much. I mean, it’s just a block. Come on?! If he (points towards Ashley Williams) had done that at Goodison Park. Can you imagine?”

Radu Dragusin’s character

Tottenham have got a very good player on their hands here and someone who is going to thrive under Postecoglou.

The 22-year-old was full of character during the game and it’s going to be something that will excite the fans ahead of next season.

Yes, Cristian Romeo and van de Ven are the main guys at the back. But they need serious cover for next season.

The London club will be returning to Europe, and as they proved when they suffered injuries, it derailed their campaign and it simply can’t happen again.
