According to numerous reports, Paulo Fonseca is set to join Tottenham as their new manager, and while he’ll be linking up with a talented squad, there’s one player he may want to have a very close look at.
Indeed, Carlos Vinicius has spent this season on loan at Tottenham, and while it’s been something of an underwhelming campaign for the Brazilian, there’s reason to believe that he’d flourish under Fonseca.
Emile Heskey called him ‘really good’ when speaking to HITC a few weeks ago, and Fonseca could be the perfect manager to unlock his talent.
Just have a look at the strikers who have scored the most goals under Fonseca in his career to date – the likes of Edin Dzeko, Facundo Ferreyra and Jackson Martinez top the list. Three big target men who hold the ball up well and do most of their work in the box.
Of course, Tottenham have Harry Kane right now leading their line, and nobody is going to usurp him, but given that the England captain loves to drop incredibly deep these days, he may not be suited to Fonseca’s system, given that he clearly has an affinity for more traditional target men.

However, Vinicius, standing at 6 ft 3, could be just what Fonseca wants, and while he hasn’t been brilliant for Tottenham, he netted 18 goals for Benfica in 2019/20, and you don’t score that many unless you’ve got something about you.
Now, we’re not saying that Vinicius should be Spurs’ first-choice number nine, but given the fact that Fonseca has successfully utilised strikers of a similar ilk in the past, he’d be a real asset to have in the squad.
Unfortunately, Daniel Levy doesn’t seem to see things the same way. He’s reportedly told Benfica that he won’t be activating Tottenham’s option to buy him this summer, but he may want to change his tune on that front if Fonseca arrives as Vinicius seems to be a great fit for his style.
