Aston Villa fans have been left rather bemused after Liverpool decided to announce Steven Gerrard’s appointment on their own Twitter feed and website.
What’s the story?
Gerrard joined Villa as their new manager yesterday, after making the move from Rangers.
Just moments after the news filtered through, Liverpool ran with the story on their own website.
Gerrard has a huge following at Liverpool and is one of their biggest legends of all time.
However, it is almost unprecedented to see an official club channel make an announcement about news at a rival side.
And Villa fans were bemused why Liverpool were getting involved on a story which didn’t appear to relate to them.
Klopp replacement?
Gerrard has already been touted as Jurgen Klopp’s potential successor at Liverpool.
Interestingly his current contract at Villa does run out when Klopp’s does at Anfield, although that may simply be a coincidence rather than an indication of the Reds’ long-term plan.
It was slightly strange to see his appointment being covered on Liverpool’s official channel yesterday, though.
The Reds, in fairness, may have just been struggling for their own content to cover – it is international break after all!
But after the reaction they got, Liverpool may avoid tweeting too much about Gerrard’s progress at Villa.
Gerrard will return to Anfield soon, on December 11th, when he will take charge of the Villans on Merseyside.
