Andy Townsend says Graham Potter’s Chelsea would be ‘crazy’ to sell Liverpool transfer target Mason Mount in the summer.
The former Premier League defender added that Mason Mount is a ‘terrific’ player and he is someone who would ‘work’ for Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp.
Despite coming through the Chelsea system and winning the European Cup with his boyhood club, this season could be the end of the road for Mount at Stamford Bridge.

Come the summer, he will have 12 months left to run on his contract and there are suggestions that it’s very likely he will head for the exit door – Paul Merson just can’t believe that Liverpool will have a chance to sign the midfielder.
Yes, there has been a ton of money spent by Todd Boehly at Chelsea, but the club’s owner still surely has to acknowledge the players that have served the West London side well over the years?!
That doesn’t seem to be the case and it is surprising Andy Townsend, who thinks Chelsea should keep Mount on board, as he told talkSPORT (21/03/23 at 5:55 pm).
“I am amazed, I am absolutely staggered,” said Townsend. “Todd Boehly, all he has done, since he has walked through the door is spend hundreds of millions of pounds.
“He will continue to do that, if he wants to ignore very good players and really good characters that are currently there. I think Mason Mount is a terrific player. He is unlucky, right now, with that contract up and just approaching a year out. He has had a little bit of a dip, yes. He is going to have to admit that.
“But is he an asset? Yes. Should he stay at Chelsea? 100%. Do I still see him being part of a successful and winning Chelsea team? Yes, I do. They will be crazy to sell him. He is worth an awful lot more. £280k-a-week, that’s a bog standard and a bang-average Premier League player is probably getting that.
“If he is thinking ‘you know what, I am not liking the vibe I am getting’, whether the contract talks have hit the buffers and he can’t move them on any further. The only place he would want to go (is Liverpool). He would work for Klopp.”

MOUNT WOULD WORK UNDER KLOPP
If Chelsea and Mount are indeed stalling on a new deal, then they’re not going to exactly fight as hard to keep him if offers come in for the midfielder in the summer.
So, from that perspective, can the Reds do a cheap deal? Either way, he is a player they should push for this summer – it has been suggested that Mount actually prefers a move to Anfield.
Aggressive without the ball, intelligent in his pressing and the ability to knit the play, Mount would help refresh Liverpool’s midfield, but most importantly, work wonders under Klopp.
