Paul Merson believes Chelsea would be helping Liverpool get back to their best by selling Mason Mount to the Reds this summer.

Merson has been speaking to Sky Sports about Mount’s situation at Chelsea.

Merson believes that there are so many players who Chelsea need to sell before considering offloading Mount.

The Arsenal legend feels Mount was ‘outstanding’ last season and Chelsea should be getting him back to that level, not selling him.

Merson noted that the interested clubs – such as Liverpool – ‘tells you everything’ about Mount’s quality.

The pundit claims Chelsea will only be helping Liverpool become a title-contending team again by selling Mount to them, feeling the Blues could be making a big mistake.

“Mason Mount was by far Chelsea’s best player last season. He was outstanding,” said Merson. “It’s different when you come through the ranks at a football club because you cost nothing. When you get bought for a lot of money you’re viewed as more of an asset. Whoever gets Mason Mount has got the biggest result ever. The kid can play. It’s bad business by Chelsea – they should give him what he’s asking for. You don’t offload your best players. There are so many players that need to get shipped out of this Chelsea squad before Mount. When you hear whispers of the teams that want to buy him that tells you everything you need to know.”

“If Liverpool go and get Mount and then Jude Bellingham, who could also go to Liverpool, you’ve got a title-contending team. Why would you want to chance that? Why would you make them stronger? I’m a huge fan of Mount, he’s a top-class player. He’s not playing at the moment because of his contract situation. With the size of the squad, they aren’t going to select a player who won’t sign a new contract,” he added.

Mason Mount to Liverpool seems a real possibility

Mount is out of contract in 2024 and there has been little to no movement on a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

If there is no agreement in the early stages of the summer window, Chelsea may well see this as the last opportunity to sell Mount before he walks away.

Liverpool are thought to be very interested and 90Min claim the Reds believe Mount would prefer a move to Anfield over the likes of Newcastle United, Manchester City and Manchester United.

The Reds are desperate for midfield additions this summer and Mount is one name on the radar.

The 24-year-old clearly has bags of quality in his locker but this has been a testing season against the backdrop of his contract stand-off.

Chelsea will be adding a new attacking midfielder this summer in Christopher Nkunku, possibly leaving Mount out in the cold.

A move to Liverpool will surely appeal to Mount and Merson seemingly believes that he can be a transformative addition to Jurgen Klopp’s side.
