Courtois plaque has been a commonly searched term on Google after Atletico Madrid threatened the Real Madrid goalkeeper.

Diego Simeone’s side have allegedly told the Belgium international to correct his behaviour as his legacy at the Wanda Metropolitano hangs by a thread.

That is according to Sports Keeda.

So, what has Courtois done? And will he lose his plaque outside of Atletico Madrid’s stadium? Let’s take a look…

Courtois plaque

Well, Courtois is not exactly the most popular man amongst Atletico Madrid supporters.

The 30-year-old angered fans after joining arch rivals Real Madrid from Chelsea in a £35m deal back in 2018, despite making 154 appearances for Atletico Madrid during a three-year loan spell from 2011 to 2014.

Courtois has now allegedly been given a warning by those at the Wanda Metropolitano about his attitude towards Atletico Madrid, following a string of controversial moments.

Firstly, the 6 ft 7 in glovesman angered supporters ahead of the 1-0 Champions League final win over Liverpool back in May when referring to his 2014 defeat against Los Blancos while playing for Atletico Madrid.

Courtois said: “It was different for me (in 2014). When Real Madrid play a final, they win it, so now I’m on the right side of history.”

Even the Mayor of Madrid – Jose Luis Martinez Almeida, known to be an Atletico Madrid fan – was unhappy with the remark, as detailed by ESPN.

Courtois was also the subject of abuse during the Madrid derby back in September 2019, as fans threw toy rats at him, while his plaque was vandalised with rubbish and graffiti outside.

The plaque has actually already been unofficially ripped out of the ground by supporters amid a vast amount of calls for it to be removed, although Atletico Madrid reinstated it.

There was another incident in the 2022 Madrid derby, where the Real Madrid No.1 appeared to tap on his wrist after being abused by supporters during his warmup, where a tattoo of the Champions League is inked onto his skin.

Atletico Madrid have never won the famous trophy, so it understandably riled supporters.

Why does Courtois have a plaque?

As Atletico Madrid threaten to remove his plaque, many will wonder why Courtois even has one in the first place.

Well, the Spanish giants dedicate a plaque outside of the Wanda Metropolitano to those who have made over 100 appearances for them, which Courtois did during his three-year loan spell.

The Belgian was a firm fan favourite, keeping 76 clean sheets in his 154 appearances to help Atletico Madrid win La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Europa League and also the UEFA Super Cup.

Courtois has been warned – if he continues to smear Atletico Madrid, his plaque will be removed for good.
