Claims have been made that Liverpool are closing in on the appointment of VFL Wolfsburg sporting director Jorg Schmadtke

Both journalists Florian Plettenburg and Christian Falk have given insights into the 53-year-old’s arrival at Anfield being imminent.

The good news for Liverpool fans is after former sporting director Julian Ward left the club out of the blue, Jorg Schmadtke could now be on his way in.

Jurgen Klopp himself reacted to the speculation surrounding his fellow countryman on Saturday, saying, “If it happens, it would not be a ‘Jurgen Klopp’ signing because we are both German or know each other. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s a good guy, a smart guy. Good personality, good humour.”

As the Reds would be desperate to return to their former glory or at least close to it, the need for a Director of Football cannot be understated.

Now, it seems Jorg Schmadtke is set to be the new Liverpool sporting director, with Florian Plettenburg claiming the deal is ‘almost done but not signed yet.’

In addition, it was reported by Plettenburg that the deal will happen and his main focus will be on the German market.

The final details are all that are remaining for Schmadtke to join the Reds, with his wife approving the move and him sharing a ‘top’ rapport with Klopp.

Christian Falk initially reacted to the rumours surrounding sporting director Jorg Schmadtke and Liverpool by simply tweeting, ‘coming soon.’

Falk added by saying that the German will begin work on June 1st and will initially work for three months, handling all the transfer business before it is seen whether he continues.

Liverpool are clearly hell-bent on recapturing their very best and the imminent appointment of a new sporting director in Jorg Schmadtke is an indication of this.
