Trevor Noah pulled no punches after the USMNT benefitted from Donald Trump’s meddling to get Folarin Balogun’s suspension.

President Trump admitted he called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to convince him to overturn Balogun’s red card and ban ahead of the USMNT’s Round of 16 clash against Belgium.

Comedian and political commentator Trevor Noah, who has made his disappointment in Trump’s involvement with FIFA no secret, did not hold back when responding to this incident.

Trevor Noah slams hypocritical USMNT fans for supporting Donald Trump and FIFA corruption

Speaking on his World Cup show, Trevor Noah called out Donald Trump and the USMNT supporters who have backed his attempt to interfere in the FIFA World Cup.

Noah told the fans in support of Trump’s ‘government interference’ that this was how things went at the World Cup, and they shouldn’t be accepting this.

“Americans were very quick and proud to say, ‘FIFA is a corrupt organisation… I’m glad FIFA is coming to America because they’re finally going to be held accountable,’ Until they needed some of that corruption for themselves!

“Now they’re like, ‘Yeah, man, Balogun needs to play. I’m glad Balogun is back because that was a b——- red card.’

“This happens. Welcome to the World Cup… It doesn’t matter who you are. Welcome to the World Cup. I don’t care who you are, I don’t care what country you’re from.

“There were people who were anti-Trump. And then when this thing was happening, now for the first time, they’re like, ‘Nah, Trump did the right thing.’ Hey! This is government interference!”

Donald Trump intervention could set negative FIFA World Cup precedent

Donald Trump openly admitting that he attempted to sway FIFA’s decision-making process has understandably created a lot of frustration within the football world.

Many feel that an open intervention from a political figure into footballing affairs, which is forbidden according to FIFA’s own by-laws, is an open dismissal of the rules that bind the sport.

Furthermore, Trump’s intervention leading to a successful overturning of Balogun’s ban will undoubtedly influence political figures from other nations to pressure FIFA going forward.

Gianni Infantino’s decision to accept Trump’s pressure has opened him up to accusations of favouritism and bias, along with creating a negative precedent within football going forward.
