Nacional club president Jose Fuentes has announced that Luis Suarez will leave the club next month come the end of the Uruguay footballing season, with Aston Villa linked with the striker before his return back to South America.

Speaking to the press via the Sun, the Uruguayan football official revealed that the 35-year-old’s stay with Nacional will end in October with the conclusion of the league season, with the campaign currently in the Clausura stage with Suarez’s side currently joint-top with Club Atletico River Plate.

With six games left, Suarez could leave Nacional a hero if the veteran striker is able to win the title for the South American giants, and the striker’s departure could once again open the door for Villa to sign the former Liverpool and FC Barcelona superstar.

At 441 career goals at club level, Suarez is one of the most prolific strikers around despite his current age, with the attacker already bagging four goals and three assists in eight Primera Division appearances for Nacional, an impressive tally for a 35-year-old.

Indeed, with Villa struggling for goals this season, Steven Gerrard could once again look to a former teammate to help him out in a time of need, and with the Nacional president announcing that Suarez will soon leave, the Premier League side should be looking at signing the striker after the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Fuentes said about Suarez leaving Nacional: “As soon as the [Uruguay] season is over, Suarez will leave. That is what we agreed at the time. I’m saying this so as to not generate false expectations. He made a huge effort to come here. Suarez will leave.”

Suarez was linked with a move to Villa in the summer, and with the striker already set to leave Nacional in the coming weeks, Gerrard could do with making another attempt to sign his former Liverpool teammate, who could add something special to the Villains squad.

After all, Villa’s start to the season has been marred by injuries and poor results, and signing a player like Suarez will be a major confidence boost to the entire club and could help Gerrard solve his goalscoring issue, with the Villa Park side currently lacking in the attack.
